The word “REV” stand for revolutions which is most often used in the term “RPM” which in turn is the short form for “Revolutions per Minute”. Automobile manufacturers aim to get maximum performance out of their car engines which gives the driver a fun and immersive driving experience.
These are just few of the many cars that contain these high revving engines.
PORSCHE GT3 RS
The Porsche GT3 RS is in the automotive industry often referred to as the car with the best sounding engine. This is mostly because of the highly modified and tuned 4.0-litre Flat Six engine which produces 500 hp and 339 Lt-ft of torque and revs upto 8800 Rpms.
FERRARI F12 TDF
Well no car list is ever complete without a Ferrari and neither is this. The Ferrari F12 TDF runs a 6.3-litre V12 that produces 730 hp and 509 lb-ft of torque and coupled with its 7-speed dual clutch transmission it can rev upto 8900 Rpms.
The Lexus LFA built between 2010 and 2012 was Lexus’ first shot at the super car industry and they nailed it in design and performance, not to mention it’s also a personal favorite of mine. It rocks a 4.8-litre even firing V10 that produces 550 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque and coupled with its 6-speed automated sequential gearbox the Lexus LFA is capable of revving upto 9000 Rpms. Some others cars capable of hitting 9000 Rpm redline are the Ferrari 458 and the Porsche GT3.
Alright this may not look like all the other sporty cars on this list but don’t be mistaken, this was once the fastest 1-litre capacity car in production. With its 791cc inline-4 engine it produced 70hp. By today’s standard that doesn’t sound like much, but with its capacity for revving upto 9500 Rpms it was a blast to drive. Some other cars in this category are its predecessors, the S500 and S600.
ARIEL ATOM 500
As much as the Ariel Atom looks like a Go-Kart it’s actually a road legal vehicle. Its powertrain consists of a naturally aspirated V8 that produces 500 hp which combined with its light weight carbon fibre body and the fact that it can rev upto 10500 Rpms doing 0-100 km/h in less than 2.3 secs.
Just because these cars can rev higher than most cars definitely doesn’t mean that their faster but they are higher up in the list of fast cars. As the saying goes, “Low end torque is good, but high end torque is magical.” The sound of an engine revving at higher Rpms is definitely something every car guy can appreciate.
