“Audi AG” is a German automobile manufacturer that designs, engineers and develops luxury vehicles. Along with “Mercedes” and “BMW”, it’s one of the leading luxury car brands in the world. Currently under the ownership the “Volkswagen Groups”, Audi has changed ownership rights more than any car company in the automotive industry. Like all luxury car manufacturers Audi has added impressive performance figures to its cars, however unlike its competitors they were the first to build a true supercar that will forever be an icon.
This is the “2017 Audi R8”, the latest iteration of Audi’s supercar line-up and one of the coolest cars Audi has ever produced. Infact this car is so cool even “Tony Stark” drove it.
Audi stays true to the design of the first R8 which was launched in 2006, but has tweaked it to look more modern and aggressive. Aerodynamics is a big deal in the car world today with even luxury sedans featuring air vents and ducts to improve performance and fuel efficiency. This car has air vents on each side of the front grille which direct air to the wheels for brake cooling. The air is then directed to the air vents on the car’s rear quarter panel which feed air to the engine for cooling. The 2017 R8 also comes standard with a rear wing and a diffuser for maximum downforce around tight corners.
With funding from the “Volkswagen Groups”, Audi went all out with the luxury components in this car. It has heated and cooled seats, heated/cooled steering wheel, electric seats and Audi’s industry leading digital gauge cluster. Just like all supercars the steering wheel in the R8 is dominated with buttons for absolutely everything. The Engine start/stop button, drive mode selectors, the paddle shifters and the basic radio controls, volume controls and phone settings and everything the driver can dream of. However Audi has done something none of its competitors have done, they have added all those buttons to the steering wheel and have somehow made it look good, like they belong there.
Obviously Audi did not build this car with only luxury in mind. This car is powered by a Naturally Aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine that produces nearly 610hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7-speed S Tronic Dual-Clutch Transmission and with Audi’s Quattro (Four-Wheel Drive) permanently active this car can do 0-100 kmph in just 3.3 secs and tops out at 328 kmph. The 2017 R8 also feature a new “Virtual Cockpit” and racing bucket seats that come standard. Audi has a rich racing pedigree and in honour of it they launched a track only version of the R8 in 2015 called the “Audi R8 LMS” which is just a more hardcore version of the regular R8.
Audi has had a very long line of R8’s, starting from its launch in 2006 up till 2017, all of which have stunned the world with their jaw-dropping design and mind-blowing performance. As it stands the 2017 Audi R8 is the best in its class of supercars, but with more new cars coming out this year only time will tell if it can hold its place as the best.
